Darryl's Guitar Project

Since Darryl has been so kind as to photo document our living room improvement project (coming soon to this blog, it's done, now we're still cleaning up) I thought I'd share another project he's been working on and documenting, his guitar.  Check it out, he was inspired by a lot of the art we saw in Italy and I suspect compelled to create something while I was busy creating our first child (ok, he started it before I ever got pregnant, but still, we kid about it).  Check out his many months of hard work.

My Favorite Things Today

  • Tomunchi on Parmer Lane.  Today after our workout, the hubs and I stopped in here.  I got a mix of fat free taro, pistachio, and low fat cake batter yogurt and topped it with diced mango (and possibly a smattering of gummy bears and mini M&Ms, I just came from the gym, I don't need your judgment, I was loading up on casein post workout, it was totally healthy, true story).
  • Redemption Song by Bob Marley-I've had a hell of a week and it's only Tuesday, which is frankly terrifying.  Heard this song yesterday and it nearly made me stop and cry (btw, what's that about, hormones much?), it was so perfect and brought me such peace.  I'm now listening to it like 4 times a day, mellows me out every time.  Love Bob Marley.

Stuff White People Like, And Your Little Dog Too Edition

For a while, I've been reading Stuff White People Like and I think I have a brilliant addition to their catalog as demonstrated tonight. My hypothesis: white people love to start fights at soft rock concerts.

Incident the First. It all began a few months back when a bunch of my friends and I went to a Jason Mraz concert at the Erwin Center. Without getting into too much detail to protect the reputations of the innocent, one group of friends managed to get into a fight at the concert. In said fight, one party punched the other party in the chest. Corollary to my thesis: white people like to start fights at soft rock concerts with a side of lame sauce. Seriously, who punches someone in the chest? And what is up with us white people who think we are so bad ass and aggressive and get up in each other's faces? Why are we so stressed out? It's not like the Man is holding us down or anything, we ARE the Man, man.  And did I mention it was at a Jason Mraz concert?

Incident the Second. Tonight we went to see John Mayer and during the encore a fight broke out in the row behind us. This fight was instigated by a girl about half my size who kept shoving, screaming, and flipping off a guy two times her size. In her defense, given her tiny frame and the 12 ounces of Bud Light she'd consumed through the course of the concert, she was probably wasted. But seriously people, we are at John Mayer, for heaven's sake. The man sings "Your Body is a Wonderland". I am wearing a top I bought at Nordstroms. The only way this scenario could get any whiter is if the concert was held at a Yacht Club instead of the Erwin Center. The girl kept shoving the guy over and over and over. Who shoves someone like 10 times without escalation? But I did respect the guy for not hitting a girl, though I would have liked to see him send her to the floor by pinching her shoulder or something in a Vulcan death grip. But I guess that only happens in the movies.

So I've seen (sort of) fights at both Jason Mraz and John Mayer. After these two concerts, there's really only one other I need to see a fight at to complete the Holy Trinity of white soft rock concert fights and that is none other than Jack Johnson, so I'm going to start scoping out his tour and assessing the potential of him playing the Erwin Center. And if a fight doesn't break out by the encore, I guess I'll have to throw down myself. I'll just have to be cautious to not wrinkle my Anne Taylor blouse in the process...

Download This Song Right Now, Just Do It

Do yourself a favor and download these two songs, both of which I'm listening to on a daily basis, usually on the way to work to psyche myself up for the day.  I didn't even like the TI version but I love this one to death.  Darryl thinks it's tragic.  Whatever, I still make him listen to it.

Couldn't really put the actual video on here because it's a little graphic and my mom reads this...

Here's my other fav, Hot Mess by Cobra Starship.  A) I love them.  B) I love their videos.  C) Hot Mess is probably my most used phrased of 2009.  Actually used it in a work meeting to describe a map, much to the amusement of my coworkers.  I love you Cobra Starship.  I'm also listening to Cascada's Evacuate the Dancefloor, but as a secondary obsession to these, my primary music obsession.  Enjoy!

New Music Monday

Before I start on my newest music finds, a fashion anecdote. Went to lunch with coworkers and the belt on my cardigan spontaneously fell off while I was moving a chair, onto the floor. Cue awkward reaching down to rebelt. FML.

In other news I recently bought the Glee soundtrack. Good listening at my desk. Here's a list of my latest iPod downloads:

Anya Marina's Whatever You Like, very mellow, picked it up off Gossip Girl

The Plastiscines Bitch, another GG find

Ke$sha TiK ToK, been on the radio a lot

Owl City Vanilla Twilight, love Fireflies, so I gave this song a try

Tim McGraw Southern Voice, because this man can do no wrong, so sexy
Happy Listening!

New Music!

Here are my last 3 downloads from iTunes, in no particular order:
Charlie Mars-Listen to the Dark Side of the Moon

I like this one for several reasons, A) the video stars Mary Louise Parker, who I've been told by random Starbucks employees that I resemble(whatever, I'll take it), and she's smokin' hot in it B) I really dig his sound and C) the lyrics remind me of how I spent many an afternoon in college. I was friends with these guys who had like every Pink Floyd album cover in poster form all over their apartment. I once went to a fraternity semi-formal with one of the guys, who picked me up in his van, painted with the album cover of Dark Side. It was totally platonic and we were friends for many years until we lost touch, but I sure miss that van. Which reminds me, I'm going to run into him at a wedding in a couple weeks, I should ask him about it. I wish I'd taken a photo with it to prove I used to be cool...
I'd completely written off these guys after "Hey There Delilah," I was pretty burned out, but I discovered their title track from their most recent album Big Bad World. I blame a commercial on SoapNet that uses this song, I think I saw it eleventy billion times over the weekend (who knew I liked SoapNet?) and now I'm all about this song.
Finally, I cannot tell a lie, I am a hard core Shakira fan. I'm pretty biased here, I think pretty much anything she does is amazing. AND I'm not a big poser, I listened to her back in the day when her songs were only in Spanish (pretty much during the same time as my Pink Floyd phase). It's no "Hips Don't Lie" but I'll rock out to it, as much as possible, thank you.

Add to Your iPod

Two songs that have really resonated with me this week:

Teen for God by Dar Williams off of My Better Self

Do You Remember by Jack Johnson off of In Between Dreams

Check them out, they're both available on iTunes. Also, i highly recommend checking out the Putumayo World Music Hour, on KGSR Sunday nights at 9 PM. But you can also catch their shows through their website, iTunes, and Live365.
